Tate Encounters

Image/Sound/Text:

I created this installation during my Foundation course of Art and Design. It was one of the projects which was called 'Me and My Object'. The brief was to create an assemblage from our everyday objects - especially those which we could reuse. So I came up with the idea of installation which would present some objects from my past life (in my country) and current life, in London.

In order to present my previous life in my country I decided to present it as if it was in a suitcase. Five years ago I packed my most important belongings into a suitcase and moved to London. A suit-case is also a symbol of a journey - my journey to London; to a different country and a different ‘world’.

The second piece of this assemblage was a map created by me with the intention of expressing my present life in London. The idea of this way of presenting was a result of my discovery of the similarity between the shape of London on the map and the shape of my country Poland. And so I came up with this idea to build up a London map using collected bus passes, which symbolised my present existence in London (for some unknown reason, I’ve been collecting these bus passes since I moved to London). The pictures on the map symbolised people, friends and thanks to those who made my journey to London less difficult.
